Most important thing in establishing quality culture is for the support of top management. Management must say "That quality is most important component over production quantity", the quality culture starts from this point. Quality then spreads to other managers, supervisors and finally operators. At the same time, it should be supported with SOPs, trainings, process and product audits. The other important thing is awareness.

In my tenure at CSL I was lucky enough to be lead by an innovative Leader (Tim Hughes – Senior Director of BMF) who would put trust in his staff and allowed us (his direct reports) to learn, grow, and develop ourselves. As managers we would reciprocate the same with our direct reports. We ran daily morning meeting with all staff to go over manufacturing activities, safety, and what’s hot. This ensured there was transparency, inclusiveness and a team approach.

If you want different outcome, change the way you do things, behavioural changes only comes when:

• You are specific on the behaviours you want to change and WHY, saying to meet cGMP is not specific

• We understand why our operators are continually performing these behaviours

• Operators are part of the solution not the problem

• You stop using CAPA’s as Punishment and the only solution.

In order to change current behaviour we need to be SPECIFIC on the behaviour we want to change and WHY. We need to understand why we are continually performing these behaviours.

Operators must be part of the solution not be the problem. More Corrective Actions and Preventative Actions (CAPA’s) and punishment is not the solution.
